Aoun urged that tensions between Lebanese be prevented. Archive - 7/26/2011

BEIRUT: Free Patriotic Movement MP Alain Aoun said Friday the sanctioning of Lebanese personalities would not benefit Lebanon’s stability.

“It is not in the interests of anyone that Lebanon’s stability be shook as a result of the renewal of sanctions on Lebanese personalities,” Aoun, speaking to a local radio stations, said, in a apparent reference to Washington’s decision Thursday to extend a freeze on assets of persons threatening stability in Lebanon.

Aoun also discussed a protest that took place in Jdeideh, Metn, Thursday in support of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Giant posters of Assad, Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah and Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri were lifted during the protest which was attended by some 500 Syrian and Lebanese demonstrators loyal to Assad.

Aoun, whose FPM is allied with Hezbollah in the March 8 coalition, said the rally was “not helpful and was out of place."

The FPM official urged that tensions between Lebanese be prevented.

Operation Big Blue in pictures
Several thousand volunteers took part in the 15th Operation Big Blue Association’s coastal clean-up Sunday, at beaches, cliff tops and underwater sites along Lebanon’s shore. At Raouche, Lebanese Army soldiers abseiled down the cliff face, picking up trash, while small fishing boats circled Pigeon Rocks, their passengers collecting garbage from the surface of the water.
