JERUSALEM: Christians are marking Palm Sunday in Jerusalem, commemorating Jesus’ arrival in the city two millennia ago.

Clergymen from different Christian denominations are holding services at the ancient Church of the Holy Sepulcher, revered as the site of Jesus’ crucifixion, burial and resurrection.

According to the New Testament, Palm Sunday marks the day Jesus rode into Jerusalem, greeted by cheering crowds bearing palm fronds. It marks the start of Holy Week.

This year, the calendar of Orthodox Christians coincides with that of Protestants and Roman Catholics, meaning that the sects are marking Holy Week together.

Operation Big Blue in pictures
Several thousand volunteers took part in the 15th Operation Big Blue Association’s coastal clean-up Sunday, at beaches, cliff tops and underwater sites along Lebanon’s shore. At Raouche, Lebanese Army soldiers abseiled down the cliff face, picking up trash, while small fishing boats circled Pigeon Rocks, their passengers collecting garbage from the surface of the water.
