Dhafer Youssef began his Tuesday evening concert with a spate of melodic vocalizing. Beverage sales at Music Hall's Beirut Waterfront venue immediately ceased. With the cosmopolitan quartet of jazz musicians about him looking on, the Tunisian oud-player warbled up and down the scales. Youssef deployed his voice sparingly but effectively Tuesday evening. Many of his tunes tend to be constructed in a form that's been tested and approved by audiences. It's not uncommon for compositions to commence – like this evening's opening number – with the front man's quiet crooning, not infrequently accompanied by Kristjan Randalu's superb keyboard work. By this point the vocals have acquired a mass that draws the other instrumentalists into the melee.Randalu or contrabassist Phil Donkin then echo the original line in a form of duet.
