One of this year's hottest independent films is being closely watched in the Oscars race. Set in crime-ridden New York circa 1981, "A Most Violent Year," the latest film of writer-director J.C. Chandor, is the gritty thriller."A Most Violent Year," which opens in U.S. theaters on Dec. 31, takes place in 1981, which was statistically the most violent year in New York's history, with police completely overwhelmed.Chandor was writing the script for the film just as a tragic shooting took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School, in which a disturbed young man killed 26 people, including 20 young children.The film has got rave critical reviews. It won accolades at its premier at the AFI festival in Los Angeles last month, while movie aggregator RottenTomatoes.com has anointed the film with a 95 percent positive rating.
