A composed young woman walks to a piano to stand before the keys, concealed beneath the closed lid.Featuring the talents of dancer Mia Habis, pianist Cynthia Zaven and Norwegian percussionist Oyvind Skarbo, this deliciously contemporary piece enjoyed its world premiere Monday evening at the Crypt, the basement space of St. Joseph's Church, off Monnot Street.Since the composition of both score and choreography grows from improvisation, the performance requires the three artists to listen to one another as much as it does the making of movement and music.As Skarbo's percussion passes through a moment of frenetic activity and Zaven's piano recedes to more conventional-sounding phrasing and punctuation, Habis' movement coalesces about her hands.Playing in parallel to this writhing, horizontal choreography, the piano's quiet phrasings are reminiscent of Satie's "Gymnopedie". The score gathers momentum one last time and the dancer regains her feet, moving through a series of dynamic, striding, embracing movements that make the foregoing movement appear all the more constricted by comparison.
