What I really wanted to do was replicate cars, exotic low-slung concepts that I designed myself.Last week, at the International Manufacturing Technology Show 2014 in Chicago, Local Motors, an Arizona-based automobile manufacturer, drove that fact home when it amazed spectators by managing to 3-D print and assemble an entire car live in front of attendees over the six-day span of the exhibition. That's not what's impressive since the Strati is not in fact the first car to be 3-D printed. Last year we were introduced to the Urbee 2, another 3-D printed car that weighs half what a normal automobile would weigh, and was still as strong as steel. But while the Urbee 2 took 2,500 print hours to complete – yeah, take out your calculators, that's 104 days, or three-and-a-half months – Local Motors, which has been producing motorcycles, motorized skateboards and other vehicles since 2007, printed and constructed the entire vehicle in just six days, and the printing and assembly process only took 44 hours – less than two days. What I got it out of it, however, is the following: Should 3-D printed cars go into widespread production, the car's recyclable parts and reusable parts open fantastic possibilities.
