Part of the charm of this concert was Khalife's frequent engagement with the audience between songs.Khalife would stop in the midst of songs, allowing the voices of singing audience members to echo through the venue.Halfway through the song, the younger Khalife veered into a cacophonous rampage, franticly pounding the piano keys, at times standing to play the synths.It's unclear whether this unexpected dissonance was meant to reflect the turbulence – which the elder Khalife addresses in the song's lyrics – or whether it was meant to be a contemporary treatment of a well-worn tune, but for those expecting lovely melodies, it no doubt felt like an assault on the ears. As Khalife concluded his last number, "Wakafooneh al-Hodoud," the screams from the audience grew more feverish. While some began to exit, Khalife and the ensemble returned for a final song.
