APEAL, the Association for the Promotion and Exhibition of Arts in Lebanon Tuesday announced the winners of the inaugural edition of its APEAL/MGA Scholarship Award. Raafat Majzoub and Jessica Khazrik have won scholarships to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Master of Science in Art, Culture and Technology program. "We are honoring the memory of Maria Geagea," announced APEAL president Rita Nammour, "who contributed much to the cause of young Lebanese artists, by bestowing two scholarships in her name and in her memory on behalf of APEAL to two extraordinary individuals". She said Geagea had been integral in selecting Majzoub and Khazrik for these prizes.Majzoub's work is concerned with recontextualizing contemporary landscapes through literature, visual arts and public interventions.Having emerged from a background in theater and linguistics, Khazrik employs a multidisciplinary approach in which she uses multi-media, performance art, sculpture and text to explore themes of witnessing, spectatorship, science and the writing of history.
