Lebanese feminist art at $54K a popWith such an amiable smile animating her countenance, it is little wonder that so many warm to the 83-year-old Lebanese artist Huguette Caland. The show was an attempt to catalogue more than 200 artworks, including drawings, paintings, sculptures and clothes.Throughout the years, Caland has worn the hats of the artist and the designer, and this fluidity of trans-disciplinary movement is evident in the series of wood panels. Vertical frames that seemingly serve no practical function are, therefore, interpreted to be works of art. The painting consists of a series of adjacent portraits of women. In another work, Caland artfully embodies the fourth dimension, time, in a sculpture of a lover pleasuring his partner, whose movement at different moments Caland models in a semi-abstract style.Caland is one of the very few female artists of her generation who addressed gender and sexuality in her work.
