For the 12th consecutive year, the Maqamat Dance Theater is hosting Beirut's International Platform of Dance. The festival includes 13 unique dance performances in addition to discussions, workshops and an interactive art installation in three venues. Mia Habis is acting as BIPOD director for the second year in a row since Maqamat founder and artistic director Omar Rajeh stepped down from this role last year. This year's edition focuses on the theme of dance and activism.Despite having faced financial troubles in the past, this year's festival is even larger than the last, hosting 15 international dance companies. The festival opens with "Beytna" which will be performed three nights in a row starting April 13 .The performance includes Rajeh himself along with the Palestinian musical group Le Trio Joubran as they utilize a potent cultural blend of food, drink and music to realize how contemporary dance can intersect with tradition. Finally, German Raimund Hoghe's "Quartet" will be performed on April 30, blending contemporary themes of dance with elements of whimsical elegance from a past era.
