Abou-Rahme and Abbas' piece was the focal point of "Syntax and Society," an exhibition of new and recent work by four artists that existed in an alcove of Dubai's Madinat Jumeirah conference center, the venue for Art Dubai, from 16 to 19 March. This year's winning and shortlisted artists were announced in mid-October 2015 .In its present configuration, initiated for its 2014-15 edition, the Abraaj Prize commissions new work from a single artist or artist team, whose exhibition is complemented by existing work by three artists shortlisted by the jury, each of whom is compensated with a cash prize of $10,000 . Describing the process of arranging these four artists' works within a coherent show, Haq's curatorial statement notes their "shared thematic interests ... on which each possesses a unique artistic intelligence.Of the three shortlisted artists, the work of Dina Danish is possessed of the most-consistently amusing, and quietly surprising, imagination. The second volume, "Syntax and Society," is an introduction to the works of the three shortlisted artists, generously illustrated and illuminated with an introduction by Haq and probing essays on the artists' work.
