Starting with a pilot workshop in 2009, MEPPI has aimed to identify, assess and raise awareness of photo collections in the MENA region and to build local capacity and networks around photo preservation. All were keen to share the importance of what MEPPI's expertise had contributed to their work in private photo collections, government departments, universities and NGOs.Beirut's Arab Image Foundation is MEPPI's regional partner and the symposium heard from several AIF speakers, including founder Akram Zaatari, explaining the foundation's work, raising questions around photo preservation and digitization, and providing practical information about emergency preparedness planning.A variety of courses and workshops on photo preservation have been held across the region since then, training over 70 participants from 52 institutions across 16 MENA countries. The initiative also has identified close to 300 photograph collections.Several MEPPI workshop alumni addressed the symposium about the practice of photo conservation in extremely difficult circumstances.Hadia said MEPPI team's work and support had lit the way for the antiquities department to bring its staff up to speed with best practice in photo collection preservation.
