Galerie Janine Rubeiz is showing 24 canvases, created by Hanibal Srouji between 2015 and 2017, exhibited under the title "Let us dream".In exile, Srouji was inspired by German artists who at that time were still redefining their identity in the wake of the World War II – as if turning their backs on Adorno's dictum that, after Auschwitz, poetry and fine art were barbaric.The round canvases, the use of bright colors and small lines that create landscapes with clouds, mountains and gardens, are reminiscent of traditional Chinese or Japanese drawings, suggesting an alternative Arab identity, as Srouji explains, as "part of the Orient".Students of "Orientalism" – Edward Said's iconic critique of Western artists' exotic depictions of Arabs, and those not of European heritage – might find Srouji's embrace of "The Orient" as an alternative, empowering identity problematic.
