Zad Moultaka's exhibition "SamaS" combines visual art and original musical composition to address this region's age-long cycle of violence. Now up at Sursock Museum, the work of the composer and artist premiered at the Lebanon Pavilion of the 2017 Venice Biennale, as curated by Emmanuel Dayde, the granddame of contemporary art biennales. While the sound piece was performed live in Venice and at the opening night at Sursock, an 11-minute recording of the performance is looped through the exhibition via surround-sound speakers, in an effort to approximate the powerful effect.Behind the aircraft engine is a wall installation comprised of Lebanese coins – 150,000 LL250 coins with some five piaster pieces ($1 is about LL1,500; 100 piasters per lira).Moultaka says this project, which took six months to complete, has been in the back of his mind for years. The project's reception in Venice gave Moultaka a new way to perceive his own work. "SamaS" can be seen at Sursock Museum, Ashrafieh until June 25, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
