Gold and silver funds have topped the list of best-performing investment products so far this year, benefiting from a huge rise in the price of precious metals driven by fears over the global economy. The price of gold is up 25 per cent so far this year, to $1,330 per ounce. The strong performance of precious-metal funds is a big reversal on recent years when investors were left nursing large losses after the gold price plummeted.By late 2015, the price of gold had dropped 40 per cent from its all-time high of $1,920 per ounce in 2011 . Investors in the Placeuro Gold Mines fund, the third-best performing fund in Europe this year, lost 21 per cent in 2015 .
