These are much lower for passive funds, which is what Vanguard is famous for. The US asset manager has an array of ultra low-cost index tracking funds and exchange traded funds (as well as competitively priced active funds) attracting more than $315bn of investment globally in 2016 . Investment platforms skim off further charges from the retail investor. Until this week, UK investors would have needed a six-figure sum to invest directly with Vanguard. Using an online platform such as Hargreaves Lansdown, Fidelity or AJ Bell was the only way to access its funds (entailing a platform charge of a percentage of your assets, on top of the fund charges). As I've written here before, I hold two Vanguard LifeStrategy and TargetRetirement funds in my own Isa.Investments in Vanguard funds can be transferred directly – but other investments I've made this year would need to be sold down within the existing Isa wrapper and transferred as cash, then reinvested in Vanguard funds.
