Teachers announce strike over Cabinet's wage hike

BEIRUT: The Union Coordination Committee, representing teachers, will hold a general strike on Dec. 15 in protest against the Cabinet’s decision to increase the minimum wage by LL100,000, the committee said in a statement Thursday

The committee described the decision as “weak, humiliating and [not meeting] our minimum requirement,” in a statement announcing a strike in all secondary schools, both private and public.

The statement also described the Cabinet’s decision as disgraceful.

The Cabinet approved a decree Wednesday night to raise the minimum wage by LL100,000, stipulating that salaries under LL1 million be increased by 30 percent, up to a LL200,000 increase, and salaries above LL1 million by a 20 percent increase up to LL275,000.

The General Labor Confederation also rejected the Cabinet’s approved wage hike hours after the Cabinet approved the decree and threatened to relaunch a strike that had been aborted in mid-October.

The committee’s protest will start at 11 a.m. when demonstartors will march from Sodeco in Beirut to the Grand Serail

The GLC was expected to hold a meeting Thursday to announce a strike.
