BEIRUT: Lebanese and Uruguayan officials agreed Monday to work on a cooperation treaty to help boost trade ties between the two countries, reported the National News Agency.
Following talks with Uruguay’s Ambassador to Lebanon Jorge Luis, Mohammad Shkeir, head of the union of the chambers of commerce, manufacturing and agriculture for Beirut and Mount Lebanon, said a deal has been reached on "preparations for a cooperation deal between the chambers of Beirut and Mount Lebanon and the chamber of Uruguay."
“It is essential to develop ties between the private sectors of both countries, which is considered the main driver of any future economic activity,” said Shkeir after his talks with Jorge Luis, who was accompanied by Roberto Villamil, Uruguay’s head of foreign trade relations.
As part of the preparation for the trade agreement, Shkeir said a list of potential Lebanese products for export would be drawn up and sent to the Uruguayan side, which would look into granting these items access to the market in the South American country.
For his part, Luis Jure praised the ideas that had been brought up during the discussions and voiced his readiness to “put forward all the available means to achieve our common objectives.”
