Beirut Port handles 28.5 pct more containers in 2013

BEIRUT: The number of containers handled by the Port of Beirut rose in January 2013 by 28.5 percent to reach 56,239 compared to the same month last year, according to the latest statistics issued by the port.

During the same period last year, the number of containers declined by 6.4 percent and totaled 43,775. The volume of port activity as measured in tons declined by 1.4 percent year-on-year to reach 553,000 tons in January 2013 from 560,000 tons in the same month of 2012.

The number of ships edged down by 7.9 percent year-on-year, totaling 164 in January 2013, compared with 178 in January 2012. Transshipments declined by 0.8 percent year-on-year to reach 35,054 containers in January 2013 compared to 35,323 in January 2012.

As for revenues, they remained practically constant at $13.8 million in January 2013.
