BEIRUT: The killers of top Sunni Muslim preacher and outspoken supporter of President Bashar Assad have been arrested, Syrian Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi said Tuesday.
“The group that assassinated [Sheikh Mohammad Said Ramadan] al-Buti and tried to assassinate me has been apprehended,” Halqi told the Arabic satellite television station Al-Mayadeen.
“The confession of the [group’s] individuals will be soon revealed,” he added.
Buti’s assassination in March by a suicide bomber was blamed on Islamic extremists fighting alongside rebels in their two-year-old uprising against Assad’s regime. At least 41 others were killed and more than 84 wounded in the bombing at a Damascus mosque.
Buti was the most senior religious figure to be killed in Syria's civil war. His assassination was a major blow to Assad, who is fighting mainly Sunni rebels seeking to topple him.
