Mind & Matter: Allan Chaaraoui

Chaaraoui’s fondest memories are of Ottawa.

Allan Chaaraoui is the lead singer of Lebanese indie rock band Lazzy Lung. A Canada native, he moved to Beirut in 2006 where he met the other three members of the band, who began playing together in 2009. Most recently voted Time Out Critics’ Choice Best Local Act of 2012, their second album, Sailor’s Delight, is out in the summer of 2013.

Q: Describe a typical day.

A: Stretch. Wash Up. Surf the net/emails while enjoying breakfast. Fiddle around on the guitar. Contemplate working out – settle on not working out. Call [best friend and Lazzy Lung bassist] Imad. Head to the studio. Call the band. Wait. Record/rehearse. Head to Crew Express ... drink ... Go home ... Surf the net. Sleep. Repeat

Q: What was the last thing you bought?

A: A ridiculous amount of pirated movies – almost a full grocery bag ... it was in preparation for our weekly movie night that has become somewhat of a tradition in our household. My roommates Tim and Nadim all chip in for dinner and a movie.

Q: Who was the last person you spoke to?

A: I last spoke with Imad. He was all excited and in a hurry to share some awesome ideas for music videos for the upcoming album. Phone credit is always an issue.

Q: Describe Lebanon in five words.

A: Stockholm Syndrome. Loud. Music. Summer.

Q: If you could change one thing about Lebanon, what would it be?

A: The Internet ... at least we could bitch about life here quicker.

Q: What’s your earliest memory?

A: My grandparents’ house/current home in Ottawa ... it was being built when my mother was still pregnant.

All of my fondest memories took place in that house. There was a distinct sound when the car would drive over the gravel laneway, and I would get all excited to be home.

Q: What did you want to be as a child?

A: I wanted to be a ninja. My parents were pretty lax about kung-fu movies and other ultra-violent films. I remember watching “Ninja III: The Domination” religiously – p.s. still love it.

Q: What advice would you give your younger self?

A: Don’t stop martial arts or aspiring to master the ancient art of Ninjitsu.

She will break your heart.

Q: If you could be anywhere right now, where would you be?

A: On tour with the band some place warm, where palms trees grow and the sea wind blows.

Q: What’s your favorite word?

A: F ?.

Q: What’s the scariest thing you’ve done?

A: Stole my dad’s BMW when I was 11. I took the car to go do grocery shopping for the house ... like a boss.

Everything was going OK until the very last second when the gate at the end of the laneway ... totally got in the way.

Scratched the side of the car from the front passenger side all the way down ... my ears are still ringing.

Leave home is up there too.

Q: How often do you laugh?

A: Every 15 minutes.

Q: What’s your party trick?

A: I bet I can drink these two beers before you drink those two shots. ... You can’t touch my glass and I can’t touch yours.

Q: What do you look forward to?

A: Lazzy Lung is about release our second album as well as a string of awesome music videos. This band has been the driving force behind my mental stability in this world. I look forward to the day when money works for me, and I no longer need to work for money.

Q: Happiness is ...

A: found in the simplest of things.
