BEIRUT: Lebanese jewelers Mouawad unveiled a $10 million bra made from diamonds and precious stones for Victoria’s Secret, which will present the creation at its televised December fashion show in New York. Mouawad has designed bejeweled bras for the American lingerie chain for more than a decade. In 2001, the jewelers made history with a $12.5 million Victoria’s Secret bra that the Guinness Book of World Records entered as the world’s most expensive bra.
Choosing not to break its record, this year’s design costs $2.5 million shy of that Guinness achievement and is made from 4,200 precious gems. Diamond fans adorn the top part of the bra, along with blue sapphire and ruby florets. The cups are covered in rubies and yellow sapphires, and a massive 52-carat, pear-shaped ruby dangles from the center accompanied by a diamond ribbon.
The jewelers chose this year to pair the bra with a matching bejeweled belt that wraps around the tummy and played on Victoria’s Secret’s tribute to British Angels by using a patriotic mixture of gold, red, white and blue.
Entitled the Royal Fantasy Bra and Belt, the lingerie set was inspired by the “trend setting ’60s, when models like Twiggy, Jean Shrimpton and Patty Boyd ruled the runways and dominated the covers of Vogue, Vanity Fair and Harper’s Bazaar,” according to a statement by Mouawad.
Victoria’s Secret angel Candice Swanepoel of South Africa will model the bra in the brand’s 2013 Dreams and Fantasies catalog as well as the fashion show airing Dec. 10 on American television network CBS.
Wearing a fantasy bra is a rite of passage of sorts for Victoria’s Secret angels, as the bras must be custom made for the model and are delegated to only the brand’s top angels. Mouawad’s record-breaking bra was worn by Heidi Klum, and past fantasy bra models include Tyra Banks, Selita Ebanks and Gisele Bundchen.
Mouawad’s story began with its founder David Mouawad, who learned the craft in Mexico and returned to open his business in Beirut in 1908.
Now run by its fourth generation, the jewelers have dressed a huge number of Hollywood and regional stars in their precious gems.
The jewelers also have a penchant for making world records. They are in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most valuable necklace in the world, valued at $55 million, and the most valuable handbag at $3.8 million.
Talking to PEOPLE magazine, Swanepoel said she was excited to wear the bra:
“I tried to imagine after they’d done the mold how would they make it, how it would look. My imagination didn’t do it justice.”
