The car industry is an extremely competitive sector. It wasn't too long ago that we tried out Hyundai's refreshed Elantra, which featured a number of modifications to lend the car a decidedly more premium appearance. This time we got handed the keys, or to be more accurate the key fob, to the 2017 Elantra, and I can assure you this car is phenomenal. The Elantra joins a new class of compact cars including the Honda Civic and the Chevrolet Cruze that aim to be premium and substantial despite being small. At first glance it immediately reminds you of Hyundai's larger Sonata sedan, a deliberate redesign that brings the Elantra's look in line with the rest of Hyundai's new generation of cars. The car also feels much quieter than the last generation Elantra, thanks to thicker windows, a revised suspension and a lot of sound insulation that Hyundai has added in strategic locations.Hyundai still eschews the more efficient continuously variable transmission adopted by many of its rivals, but the six-speed automatic transmission used in the Elantra feels more natural and in no way detracts from the car's smooth ride.In my opinion it has succeeded in producing a car that looks and feels decidedly more upscale than its class would suggest, and has loaded it with so much tech that you wonder how it all fits in the car.
