Then along came some smarty-pants and decided to rename it the GTI, although I have no idea why it wasn't called the GTE considering that the German word for "Injection" is "Einspritzung".In any case, nomenclature aside, the new car, which was supposed to be limited to 5,000 units, drove car-buyers nuts – selling more than 5,000 a month at the height of its success – and more than 40 years later, we still have the GTI, now in its seventh generation, roaming streets on every continent.More importantly, the Golf GTI literally had no rivals, none.This car could sprint to 100 kilometers per hour in around 9 seconds, and achieve a top speed of 183 kph, figures that are respectable even today, but at the time were astonishing for a car of this category.
