The municipality of Sidon is now in the last stages of reconstructing its main square, as part of a bigger project of rehabilitation in the city. Many Sidonians, however, ignore the two former names and opt for the name Nijmeh Square. The square, in Sidon's downtown, is located between Jezzine Street to the north and Riad al-Solh Street to the south. The square was entirely leveled during the Israeli invasion of 1982 .The creation of a pool and fountains within the square were among the renovations made during the tenure of former Sidon's mayor Abdel-Rahman al-Bizri.However, approximately a year ago, the square received a complete facelift, changing its form, size and structure, as part of a large-scale rehabilitation project in the southern city's commercial downtown area.
