Russia says UNESCO fund freeze by US 'unfortunate'

ABU DHABI: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Tuesday that Washington's decision to cut its funding to UNESCO in response to admitting Palestine as a full member was "unfortunate."

"I believe it is very unfortunate that the United States has decided to deprive UNESCO from its contributions," Lavrov told reporters on the sidelines of a joint meeting with Gulf officials in the United Arab Emirates.

"I think the Palestinian membership in the UNESCO was a very legitimate request from Ramallah," said Lavrov.

The United States cut its funding to the UN's cultural arm on Monday after a majority of member states defied American and Israeli warnings and voted to allow Palestinians full membership in the organization.

Washington, whose funding amounts to almost a quarter of the cultural body's overall budget, warned of a "cascade" effect should other UN bodies follow suit.

The resolution approving Palestinian membership was adopted to loud applause by 107-14, with 52 abstaining.

The Palestinians could now seek full membership of other UN organizations like the World Intellectual Property Organization, the World Health Organization, the International Civil Aviation Organization and the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Such moves would place the United States in an increasing diplomatic bind as in the 1990s it banned the financing of any UN organization that accepts Palestine as a full member.

Washington, the main broker in negotiations between Israel and Palestinians, has failed to revive negotiations that stalled over the Palestinians insistence that Israel freeze settlement construction in occupied lands.

Look up the definition of the word colonialism. For centuries, the European, than American gov'ts invaded and manipulated weaker countries to enable their freebooters and corporations to steal their natural resources and lands for colonization. with the enslavement, murder and genocide of the Indigenous people. Theft and Murder.
The munitions, weapons and military supply and hardware corporations profit off the invasions and propping up despot puppet regimes to enable the theft of resources and lands. They profit off the despots subjugation of their people through kidnappings, rape, intimidation and murder to enable the theft. When they don't toe the line, they're replaced.
When the invasions are successful, the oil, energy and mining cvonglomerates profit off stolen resources.
No ethics, morality or legal standing for these theives and murderers who don't care how many people die for their blood money profits.
These thieves and murderers and their bought off corrupted politicians and embedded and burrowed officials and operatives refuse to admit their policies are nnothing but theft and murder and results in terrorist attacks by p--sed off people affected by the policies of theft and murder.
They'll be forced to admit to the world that they are guilty of theft and murder and are responsible for the murder of 3,000 Americans on 9/11.
America spends trillions of borrowed money in order to profit a select few with millions.billioons and tens of billions in a lopsided scheme to defraud Americans.
They get the profits off the sale of their wares of death and stolen resources.
America gets the trillion dollar bills and the resulting terrorist attacks.

There is No peace with the Arabs specially the so called Palestinians. I am Egyptian American but support Israel against those so called Palestinian terrorist. I think the U.S did the right thing, it's time we protected Israel and america from those low-life losers who cry wolf in the name of democracy only to stab us in the back, the Palestinians don't want peace with the Jewish people, they wanna take their country and land. I think the U.S needs to stand strong against allowing those murderers aka palestinians from being part of any UN group.
