Pope warns US against 'radical secularism'

VATICAN CITY: Pope Benedict XVI warned against the grave dangers that "radical secularism" posed to the Catholic Church and society in general during a meeting Thursday with US bishops.

The United States was founded "on certain ethical principles" that have "eroded significantly in the face of powerful new cultural currents...," he said.

These trends, the pontiff continued, "are not only directly opposed to core moral teachings of the Judeo-Christian tradition, but increasingly hostile to Christianity as such."

While acknowledging the legitimacy of the separation of church and state, that did not mean the Roman Catholic Church should remain silent on certain questions, he added.

"The Church has a critical role to play in countering cultural currents which, on the basis of an extreme individualism, seek to promote notions of freedom detached from moral truth," the pope said.

He noted US bishops' efforts "to maintain contacts with Catholics involved in political life and to help them understand their personal responsibility to offer public witness to their faith...".

That was especially important with regard to "the great moral issues of our time: respect for God?s gift of life, the protection of human dignity and the promotion of authentic human rights," he said.

The bishops had to ensure that American Catholics had the courage "to counter a reductive secularism which would delegitimize the Church's participation in public debate about the issues which are determining the future of American society."

The pope's comments were posted in English on the Vatican website.

Those who want to take God out of everything aren't doing so because they don't believe in God, but because they are in rebellion against God. It is important for all of us to not let anyone think they can be an intermediary between us and God. Jesus is the intermediary. http://atheistlegitimacy.blogspot.com/

I agree with the statement of Pope Benedict XVI !!!

On the opinion page in the Daily Herald, written on Oct.1 2009, I commented on the state of the times in the U.S.A.

In the past, the world looked up to the U.S. Because we stood up for Real Freedom with a true stance of taking the high moral ground. In the last 40 years, we have seen this country decline on all fronts. Now we live in Bizzaro World ! Common sense is not so common and the love of God has been thrown out the door to be devoured by those who live amoral lives.

Real freedom and peace grow when we the people live by the rules of God. First, we must give God His due respect. Integrity is important. Stop lying, cheating, stealing and killing. Stop aborting our future. Do unto others, as you would have them do unto you!!!

These rules of freedom are not easy to follow, especially in today's society, but if everybody would try every day to put their trust in God, the benefits would be peace and forgiveness, less depression, better health, love of neighbors, integrity, honor in truth, better government with less interference and happiness.

The result would renew our spirits and self-respect, as well as those of the country as a whole. This is a commitment !!! It's up to all of us!!! IN GOD WE TRUST !!!

We need to pray for the American bishops to step up to the plate and speak out concerning these issues. If they are unwilling to do so, we need to pray for the Lord to remove them quickly!

Yes, but how did this secularism gain ascendancy? The priest scandals and the erosion of the sacred within the Church stemming from Vatican II has played a large role. Additionally, the U.S. Bishops have been surprisingly liberal in many instances on socio-political issues.

Certainly the sexual abuse scandal has hurt the Church, but in the US the media dictates to the people. According to Neilson, in 2011 the average American watched over 4 hours of "live" TV a day! That's when Americans internalize the pagan propaganda.

Though we did not know that he read our blog, we are proud to upset the pope.
