Romanian MPs begin procedures to remove president

BUCHAREST: Romanian members of parliament Wednesday began procedures to remove President Traian Basescu from office, the new parliamentary speaker Valeriu Zgonea said.

Parliamentarians from the ruling center-left coalition have called an extraordinary session Thursday and Friday to debate a call to strip the center-right president of his official powers, Zgonea told journalists.
