Jamaica officer accused of killing pregnant woman

KINGSTON, Jamaica: Jamaican police say an officer has been accused of fatally shooting a pregnant woman and wounding her sister.

Sunday's police statement says the accused policeman has been removed from front-line duty. His identity has not been released.

An independent commission that investigates abuse allegations against police is probing the matter.

Witnesses in the coastal town of Yallahs allege that the officer shot the two women Saturday after a scuffle broke out as he tried to arrest one of them for using indecent language.

Furious residents blocked the road leading to the police station after the shootings. A large number of officers were deployed to the area to quell the disturbance.

Human rights groups have long asserted that a culture of impunity has given many Jamaican police a shoot-first mentality.
