TIRANA: Albanian police on Tuesday detained at least 50 seasonal workers believed to be cannabis growers in the southern village of Lazarat, near the border with Greece.
Authorities say Lazarat is the Balkan country's largest producer of the drug with an estimated annual production of some 900 tonnes worth around 4.5 billion euros ($5.9 billion).
Albania is considered a major transit zone for drugs and the leading supplier of cannabis in Europe.
In July police seized some 1.2 tonnes of the drug destined for Italy.
Last year, police seized more than 10 tonnes of cannabis destined for European markets, notably Greece and Italy.
