SANTIAGO: Protesters hurling Molotov cocktails set fire to three buses in the Chilean capital Santiago during clashes overnight with police, authorities said Tuesday.
Passengers aboard the buses managed to flee to safety, with no injuries reported even though gunfire was heard and protesters pelted the area with stones, Rodolfo Pacheco, the chief of police in the city's western metropolitan district, told reporters.
The protests were convened to commemorate the death of a minor who was shot to death by police at a demonstration two years ago.
Police dispersed the protesters in Monday night's clashes with water cannons and tear gas, Pacheco said. No arrests were made, he added.
He said one of the buses was totally destroyed by fire, while the other two were partially damaged.
