KIEV: The United States stands with the Ukrainians protesting for a future in Europe and the government should listen to the aspirations of its people, a senior US diplomat said in Kiev Thursday.
"We stand with the people of Ukraine who see their future in Europe," Assistant Secretary of State Victoria Nuland said at the opening of an OSCE security meeting in Kiev. "We urge the Ukrainian government to listen to the voices of its people who want to live in freedom."
She added: "This is Ukraine's moment. To meet the aspirations of the people or to disappoint them and risk descending into chaos and violence."
Nuland was representing the United States at the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) meeting after Secretary of State John Kerry shelved a plan to attend when Ukraine scrapped the signature of a key deal with the European Union.
The government's decision to freeze the accord sparked mass street protests by pro-European Ukrainians.
