JOHANNESBURG: Police in South Africa say they've arrested the "ringleader" of a group of 19 Congolese rebels who face charges of allegedly plotting a war and a coup against Congolese President Joseph Kabila.
Capt. Paul Ramaloko of the South African Police Service said Sunday that they arrested the man Friday in Cape Town. Ramaloko said the man had cooperated with police and would be arraigned in court early next week.
Ramaloko declined to name the man arrested. However, his description of a ringleader makes it likely the man is Etienne Kabila, who claims to be a son of Congo's assassinated president, something the Kabila family denies. Laurent Kabila's son, Joseph Kabila, is Congo's current president.
The 19 alleged rebels, arrested last week, are scheduled for a bail hearing Thursday.
