MANILA: Philippine officials say a homemade bomb strapped to a bicycle has exploded in a commercial district of a southern city, wounding at least nine people and damaging a car and a nearby store. Authorities say a local feud or extortion may be the motive for the attack in Iligan city.

Mayor Lawrence Cruz says the bomb exploded Monday on a sidewalk, wounding passers-by and damaging a car and a nearby pawnshop. He says the bomb was wrapped in cloth and attached to a parked bicycle.

Cruz says police have strengthened security in Iligan following the attack.

Officials say investigators are trying to identify the attackers and determine the motive, including extortion by an armed gang or a local feud.

Muslim rebels were blamed for a past bomb attack in Iligan.
