TIRANA: Police in Albania said Friday they had seized almost 1.5 tonnes of cannabis destined for Italy near the northern Albanian town of Shkodra on the border with Montenegro.

The traffickers managed to flee, police said in a statement.

According to an initial probe, the drugs were being taken to Italy, via Montenegro.

Albania is considered a major transit zone for narcotics and the main provider of marijuana in Europe, according to international police reports.

In 2012, over eight tonnes of cannabis destined for the European market were seized in the country.
