BUCHAREST: Ten Romanians are under investigation for stealing Giorgio Armani designer clothing worth nearly $2.7 million (2.0 million euros) from an Italian warehouse, prosecutors said Monday.

The suspects allegedly broke into a storehouse in the northern Italian city of Verona last December and made off with more than 1,400 items from the Armani spring 2013 collection.

The clothes, which were worth between $1,890 and $2,700 per item were then sent to Romania.

"The suspects ingeniously managed to shut off the security system in a very short lapse of time," the police said in a press release.

The goods were to be sold on the Romanian and the European markets, it added.

Searches conducted at six addresses in Romania on January 18 led to the discovery of 1,378 of the stolen items, the police said.

Two members of the criminal ring were arrested in Italy, while another suspect is being sought by Italian law enforcement officials.
