Journalist fatally shot in northern Mexico
Agence France Presse

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico: A journalist who ran an online publication in northern Mexico has been fatally shot, according to a posting Monday on the website, which said the man's body was riddled with at least 18 bullets.

The killing late Sunday has led to a decision to shut down the publication, which covered general news in Ojinga, a town in the state of Chihuahua which shares a border with the US state of Texas.

"Jaime Guadalupe Gonzalez Dominguez, 38, was shot at least 18 times," the website wrote.

"This very likely is the last news reported by this site," the posting read, adding: "This attack on journalism is a real shame."

Authorities said Gonzalez Dominguez came under fire from several gunmen in broad daylight on a street in Ojinga.

Officials said the gunmen made away with a camera the he was carrying at the time of the shooting. A female companion with Gonzalez Dominguez was not injured.

Attacks against journalists in Mexico have increased dramatically over the past several years, particularly in states plagued by organized crime and drug trafficking.
