BAMAKO: State television says Mali's president has named a new prime minister after the government resigned.

The statement Saturday evening said President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita has named Moussa Mara, a former urban policy minister, as the West African country's new prime minister.

The naming of Mara comes after the resignation of Oumar Tatam Ly, who had led the government since Keita took office in September 2013.

A new government must be created in the coming days to take into account the new political makeup of the National Assembly, where deputies elected in December have taken up their posts.
