Cyprus' newly appointed defence minister Tasos Mitsopoulos signs a book during his searing in ceremony at the presidential palace in Nicosia on March 14, 2014 as Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades (L) swore in three new ministers and reassigned another, in a mini-reshuffle triggered by a walkout by his coalition partner over resumed reunification talks with Turkish Cypriots. NICOSIA: Cyprus's recently appointed Defense Minister Tasos Mitsopoulos is in hospital in a serious condition after suffering a brain hemorrhage, doctors told reporters on Friday.

Mitsopoulos, 48, was taken to at Nicosia General Hospital on Friday after reportedly fainting at his ministry and being found unconscious in his office by his secretary.

Mitsopoulos was made defense minister in a cabinet reshuffle last week.

Previously, he had held the communications portfolio under conservative President Nicos Anastasiades, who is due to return early from a European Union summit meeting in Brussels.

Neurosurgeon Akis Lambrou told reporters that the minister suffered a "subarachnoid hemorrhage".

"The medical team of the hospital's neurosurgical department is taking appropriate medical action, for the best possible patient care," Lambrou said.
