VERACRUZ, Mexico: Authorities in Mexico's Gulf coast state of Veracruz say state police and soldiers engaged in a gunbattle with suspected kidnappers, killing nine men and a woman.

The state Public Safety Department says in a brief statement that state police and soldiers were patrolling in the town of El Perote when assailants opened fire from inside a house late Thursday.

It says the soldiers and police returned fire and killed 10 people inside the house.

Officials say police seized 10 automatic rifles, cartridges, ammunition and T-shirts and caps with fake logos of Mexican's federal police and Veracruz state investigative police.

The officials say preliminary information indicates those killed were likely members of the Zetas drug cartel.
