BEIRUT: A Lebanese journalist committed suicide late Friday, jumping from the balcony of his house in a suburb of Beirut, a security source said over the weekend. Nasri Akkawi, who was in his late 60s, fell to his death from the balcony of his home in Boushrieh, said the security source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The source said Akkawi had financial difficulties since the newspaper AlBayraq shut down in 2011 and had been unable to find employment.
Akkawi’s difficulties worsened after the ruling in a case pressed by other laid-off workers from the daily newspaper was delayed.
The workers claim they were fired without compensation. Al-Bayraq closed after the death of its publisher, Melhem Karam, in August 2011.
