BEIRUT: Two policemen were wounded in a shootout with a wanted man in the Bekaa Valley town of Hermel, east Lebanon, a security source said Thursday.
The source said the gunfight erupted before sundown Wednesday when fugitive Omar Awad pulled out his pistol and opened fire on members of the judicial police, slightly wounding two of them.
Awad, wanted for several arrest warrants including arms trafficking, was arrested, the source said.
Following the gunfight, a group of men blocked a road near Baalbek’s Nasser Square with burning tires in protest at Awad’s arrest.
The demonstrators also held an hour-long sit-in at Nasser Square. It ended after intervention from Awad’s father.
