BEIRUT: Caretaker Defense Minister Fayez Ghosn warned Thursday that the security situation in Lebanon has reached “a delicate stage” and urged the Lebanese to rally behind the Army in its fight against terrorism.

“The war on terrorism has become the theme of the current stage, especially since this terrorism, which has no religion or sect, needs only the fragmentation and divisions of the Lebanese in order to sweep them,” Ghosn said in a statement.

“Hence, it is the duty of all the Lebanese to show solidarity and not fall into the call for strife and sectarian incitement and facilitate the work of security agencies which have been mobilized with all their efforts and energies to protect Lebanon from this deadly disease,” he added.

Ghosn said attempts by some politicians to cast doubts about the work of security agencies or to label these agencies in sectarian terms were harmful to Lebanon and the Lebanese.

“The information about the presence of terror cells working day and night with the aim of inciting strife by targeting some areas with bombings is not new. The Lebanese Army has for a while been following up this information and pursuing those suspected of involvement in them,” he said.
