DIMAN, Lebanon: Maronite Patriarch Beshara Rai said Thursday that Lebanon was a diverse country that offered a model for the Levant, which is witnessing a “war over coexistence.”
“Sunnis and Shiites are unable to coexist and the Jews are unable to coexist with Arabs in Israel and Palestine.
As for fundamentalists, they are unable to live with moderate Muslims,” Rai said, addressing a delegation of young people of Lebanese origin visiting the country.
“But we Muslims and Christians live together under equality and mutual respect; this is the great role Lebanon has to demonstrate to the Arab world. You must explain to the world the special nature of your homeland,” Rai told the delegation, at his summer residence in Diman.
Rai also urged his visitors to register with civil authorities in order to preserve parity between Muslims and Christians in the country.
“As you know, the Lebanese system is based on demographics.
That is, there is parity between Muslims and Christians who share power and administrative posts based on their demographics,” he added.
