BEIRUT: Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Araghchi denounced Friday the Israeli raid in an area south of Beirut, saying Lebanon would not allow the Jewish state to take advantage of the volatile regional situation.
"The raid ... is a blatant violation of international rules and norms particularly a violation of Lebanon's sovereignty,” Araghchi said, according to Fars News Agency.
"Certainly, Lebanon's government and people know very well the malicious intentions of the Zionists in these circumstances in the region and they won't allow them to take advantage of such circumstances for their aggressive goals,” he added.
Early Friday, the Israeli air force carried out a rare strike in an area south of Beirut near a base belonging to an armed Palestinian faction, one day after rockets from south Lebanon were fired into Israel.
An official with the Palestinian Front for the Liberation of Palestine – General Command told The Daily Star that an Israeli jet fired a missile in a Naameh valley, an area some 15 kilometers south of Beirut, where the Palestinian group maintains a military base.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran asks the international and regional institutions particularly the Islamic Cooperation Council to honestly condemn the Zionist aggression and to work to prevent similar future occurrences,” Araghchi said.
