BAALBEK, Lebanon: Residents from the northern village of Maqneh in the Bekaa Valley briefly blocked part of the international highway Sunday to protest the frequent robberies along the road.
“We decided to take this measure following the recurrent robberies and muggings targeting drivers, many of whom are our residents, perpetrated by a well-known gang on this road,” Maqneh Mayor Fadi Moqdad said.
According to Moqdad the most recent incident took place Friday night, “when well-known armed men mugged a resident of Maqneh, forcing him and his wife to vacate the vehicle, before taking off with it.”
“We came to know later that the culprits were members of the Jaafar clan,” the mayor said.
“The security forces should return this stolen car, which is located in the neighborhood of Sharawneh [in the city of Baalbek].”
“Until this happens we ask all residents of Baalbek, and especially the Jaafar family, not to pass through our village,” he added.
