BEIRUT: Speaker Nabih Berri emphasized that no Cabinet will be formed without Hezbollah's participation in remarks published Friday, as he warned against a possible U.S. military strike on Syria.
“The Cabinet cannot be formed without the participation of Hezbollah in it, Berri told Al-Joumhouria daily.
“Vetoes do not exist in Lebanon no party can place a veto on the other,” he said.
Berri accused the March 14 coalition of obstructing the formation of the Cabinet and stressed that the recent regional developments require creatinga new government as soon as possible.
“The opposing side is responsible for obstructing this formation... The new government should be formed today and not tomorrow and it should have been formed three months ago,” he said.
The formation of the Prime Minister-designate Tammam Salam has been stalled for over five months over differences between the rival political groups in Lebanon.
While the March 14 coalition has called for a non-partisan Cabinet, Hezbollah insists on a government with full political representation.
Berri also warned against a possible U.S. military strike to Syria after the alleged chemical attack by Syria’s government against its people.
“All forces should unite at this stage to spare Lebanon the repercussions of what is going on in the region, he said.
“If the strike is limited then we can contain its repercussions but if not, we cannot tell what the consequences would be.”
