BEIRUT: The Order of Physicians urged police Friday to step up security measures, especially for pharmacists covering night shifts, after one was almost kidnapped in the Bekaa Valley.
In a statement, the order denounced the attempt to kidnap pharmacist Wissam Khatib in the Bekaa Valley city of Zahle Thursday.
Khatib was driving home when an armed gang in an SUV blocked the road and mugged him near his pharmacy.
He eventually managed to escape by flooring the gas pedal, slamming into the other vehicle and speeding off.
The statement denounced “the daily robberies and attacks on pharmacists,” and urged that police “protect pharmacists, especially during night shifts, so they can pursue their responsibilities of providing the sick with medicine during late night hours.”
