BEIRUT: Caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati will file a libel lawsuit against Charles Ayoub, the editor-in-chief and publisher of Ad-Diyar newspaper, according to a statement from Mikati’s office Saturday.
The statement said Ad-Diyar had published inaccurate reports about the prime minister, particularly in its Friday edition.
In a report Friday, Ad-Diyar said Mikati was supporting, financing and protecting Sheikh Hashem Minqara, one of five people charged over the deadly Aug. 24 car bombings in the northern city of Tripoli.
It said Mikati was shocked and found himself in an embarrassing situation after Minqara, the head of a pro-Assad Islamist group in Lebanon, was charged with withholding information about the activities of the terrorist cell believed to be behind the attack that killed 47 people and wounded hundreds.
Minqara and four others were charged Friday in the case and have been referred to the Military Investigative Judge for further questioning.
According to the statemetn, Mikati’s lawyer Kamal Abu Daher said that “what Ad-Diyar published is false news and considered incitement with the aim to harm, threaten civil peace, as well as libel and slander.”
