BEIRUT: MP Yassin Jaber Thursday stressed in a speech delivered on behalf of Speaker Nabih Berri the importance of adopting a series of measures and laws to fight endemic corruption in both the public and private sectors.
Jaber made the speech during a Parliament workshop to study ways of reinforcing the implementation of the U.N. convention against corruption.
The workshop was also held to mark International Anti-Corruption Day, which falls on Dec. 9. Jaber said the workshop was meant to discuss a means to implement the convention, which Lebanon ratified in April 2009, and to prepare an effective and coordinated national strategy to fight corruption.
“The 1,000-mile journey starts with one step and through joining this convention we have made the first step. We don’t have illusions that things will change overnight, especially as Lebanon is passing a difficult situation, but this workshop will surely light the way,” Jaber added.
